It’s that time of year again for the leaves to change their colors, stores to start selling Halloween candy, and Thanksgiving stuffs showing up everywhere. Oh! And there’s a plethora of Pumpkin beer awesomeness at your favorite bottle shop. Yep, Pumpkin beers are made by tons of craft brewers these days and they all are worth trying. Here are 3 of them, and I hope you enjoy trying these bad boys with something warm and toasty.
Coronado Brewing – Punk’in Drublic
Great aroma; Kind of a cross between the pie spices and a fresh carved pumpkin, and a hint of citrus. Looks like what I was hoping for in a beer with theImperial monicker… Rich brown’s in the center, leading out to a rustic orange; great initial head, which fades quickly. Flavor starts off full, with plenty of character, yet quickly finishes dry and astringent. Seems to be missing some body. It’s finish is a bit odd, and pretty dry. Dryer than I’d expect. Overall, somewhat one dimensional, and a little boozy. Let it warm up a bit and you may find some comforting changes.
Dogfish Head Brewing – Punkin’
Bright aroma of spices and squash, without overpowering your nose. Beautiful amber color, consistent throughout the glass. Has a very well balanced flavor profile, with the flavors of classic pumpkin pie blended evenly with a smooth malt back. Finishes clean, leaving a pleasant spice on the back of your palette. Essentially, this is what I enjoy in a beer of the once a year type.
Alaskan Brewing – Pumpkin Porter
Even spice aroma’s waft up through the glass, with notes of dark chocolate and toasted caramel. Dark, all the way through. Hint of golden caramel at the bottom of the glass, but that might just be my imagination. Great balance here, of baking spices and chocolate… and toffee; And it just works. Leaves your palette with a creamy texture (not overpowering) that makes you want the next sip. All of the pumpkin and porter flavors fit together exactly how you want ingredients to work in a beer recipe.
Go out and find a Pumpkin beer on this list, or something else you’ve never had before and put it in your mouth! Oh, and if you really want to have some fun with it, grab some French Vanilla ice cream… Maybe some Oreo’s for good measure.
